There are many factors that can affect the quality of a call made over IP Voice.
It is important to note that poor call quality may not be the fault of your network. As the call travels across the internet to our servers, the call may still be transmitted across our carriage providers network, through to other carriage providers and across technology types such as PSTN, ISDN or GSM.
When connecting to another party who is also using an IP Voice service, the call quality may be reliant on their service also.
Shared Internet Connection
If you are using a shared internet connection, (i.e with other computers/devices on your network), if other devices make large file transfers across the internet while you are on a call the call may appear to cut out, you could hear strange noises or speach may become delayed.
You may need to consider a dedicated internet service if your call quality is often degraded due to mission critical data usage.
Codec Choice
Most IP Voice handsets come with a range of IP Voice codecs, depending on your bandwidth and hardware, you may need to adjust your codec to find one that provides suitable call quality.
Softphones
Running a softphone on your computer can bring in other issues including CPU power and available memory. Consult your softphone software provider to ensure your computer meets minimum requirements, and has enough available resources at the time of a call.
Phone Settings
Most IP Voice handsets will have the ability to change sound settigns such as noise suppression and echo cancellation, adjusting these settigns to your needs will change your call quality. You will need to determine the settings that work best for you and your environmnet.
